Dear Sir or Madame.

Kelly Consulting is a small firm with one employee but I often contract out parts of a bigger job -- design, programming, and/or education if required. Most of the time, I do the work myself.

My typical engagements have involved some level of technical systems programming.

For example, I helped companies move from one release of the IBM i OS to another. I help them use conversion tools to move from non-IBM to IBM code. I help them to migrate from System/38 or System/36 to AS/400 (IBM i).

I also have built systems applications to solve specific needs of clients. For example, I designed and programmed and implemented a security system using CL and RPGIV so that one of my clients could add additional security controls to either prohibit certain security officers from performing certain functions or logging and sending messages to management when they attempted to do something that was not in their job d.

I also designed and programmed a system that enabled transactions to be entered into an existing application from the engineering department using MS access. I used both , "At EOF" facilties as well as database triggers to assure that the foreign transactions went through the same edits as the green screen code without having to touch the original application and without requiring the source code for the original application.

I designed and wrote the code for a UPS system to intelligently control the shutdown of the IBM i system in the event of a lightening hit.

I still provide the types of services above as well as business application design, business programming, Web design, and Web setup on IBM i.

My rate for systems programming is $95.00 per hour.  This has been my normal consulting rate for several years now, regardless of the type of work.

This rate also applied to hours and days traveling to and from a work site that is remote from my office.

I have worked on business applications written in CL and RPG/RPGIV, and limited COBOL over the years. I have taken on projects or helped IT shop personnel change application code to add or modify functions.  In the past all of these situations were performed at my normal rate applied.

However, application programming is typically easier than systems programming or systems design.

I Have been asked by clients recently if there were projects in the shop that did not require systems and specialty design expertise, but were application programming, would I be willing to charge a lower rate. I have thought this over and my rate for such projects would be $70.00 per hour.

Feel free to contact me at your convenience.

BTW, I have written a number of articles for IT Jungle (www.itjungle.com) and I have written forty-nine books, most of which are on IBM i topics. These AS/400 / IBM i books are available for sale on the www.bookhawkers.com site.

I look forward to hearing from you.
